Kiki Smith’s Flowers

In 2017 Kiki Smith (born 1954) created a series of nature inspired solarplate etchings. We have the beautiful primary colored “Untitled (Flowers)” available in our current exhibit. “DECADE | 2014-2024” is an exploration of printmaking, including “Masterworks,” prints made in collaboration with master printmaker Dan Welden.

Elaine de Kooning’s Lithos

In 1983 de Kooning visited the Paleolithic caves in Lascaux, France, and began a series of paintings based on cave paintings, she also made a number of works on paper with ink, continuing the theme of cave walls. “DECADE | 2014-2024” is an exploration of printmaking, including “Masterworks,” prints made in collaboration with printmaker Dan Welden. Liz Chalfin’s Murmurations

Murmurations 1 & 2 are new works by printmaker Liz Chalfin featured in the current exhibit. About her work, Chalfin says, “Seemingly random marks become evocations of landscapes, weather events, hinted at figures or loose architectural renderings.” On view in the printmaking exhibit, celebrating the gallery’s 10th Anniversary, “DECADE | 2014-2024” through January 5.

Solarplate Demonstration

Thirty-five people came to see master printmaker Dan Welden’s Solarplate Etching demonstration on Sunday. Since 1970, Welden is the leading innovator for healthier and safer processes in printmaking. “DECADE | 2014-2024” is commemorating the gallery’s 10th anniversary with an exploration of printmaking, October 26-January 5, all are welcome.

The gallery is closed for installation of “DECADE | 2014-2024.” MGFA is pleased to commemorate its 10th anniversary with an exploration of printmaking by represented and invited artists. Brattleboro Literary Festival

MGFA is honored to be one of downtown Brattleboro’s venues for The Brattleboro Literary Festival. Live events will be held in the gallery on Saturday, October 19, 10am-5pm. All festival events are free and open to the public, there are no tickets and seating is on a first come basis. More information here.

Vibrant Silken Forest

Included in the current exhibit we have a selection of work from several gallery artists. Gene Parulis’s dye-infused aluminum print, “Silken Forest,” can be seen in the east gallery along with other photographs, paintings, prints and sculpture. This exhibit coincides with Amy Arbus, “Beyond Reason” on view through October 6.

Lisa Mackie Solo Show

Gallery artist Lisa Mackie is currently showing “Rondo/India” at June Kelly Gallery in New York. “Essentially a teller of tales, Mackie conveys her stories using a dizzying array of media (textiles, video, sound, photography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, drawing, more).” From 6 September – 15 October, 2024.

Gallery Walk September 6

The gallery will be open Friday evening for Gallery Walk. The main gallery is showing photographer AMY ARBUS, “Beyond Reason,” featuring images capturing the skill and boldness of circus performers. Josh Bernbaum’s exquisite hand blown glass is in the middle gallery and a selection of additional gallery artists is in the east gallery. This multifaceted exhibit is on view until October 6.

It’s a Whimsical World

We have a selection of work from several gallery artists displayed throughout the gallery is addition to the main exhibit “Beyond Reason,” by Amy Arbus. Mutsu Crispin’s playful wall sculpture, “Uprising: Disobedience,” is composed of laser cut plexiglass and on view through October 6. See more of Mutsu Crispin’s whimsical work on his artist page.

Tea Cup with Reflection

Included in the current exhibit we have a selection of work from several gallery artists. David Rohn’s oversized “Tea Cup with Reflection” can be seen through the length of the gallery and observed up close. This exhibit coincides with Amy Arbus, “Beyond Reason” on view through October 6.

Josh Bernbaum Glass

The exceptional glass artist Josh Bernbaum is showing his latest work in the Middle Gallery. Bernbaum balances his deep historical research and knowledge while pushing the boundaries of formulating his own glass from scratch to achieve unique looks and qualities. This exhibit coincides with Amy Arbus, “Beyond Reason” with an Opening and Artist Reception on Saturday, August 24, 5-7pm.

Amy Arbus Artist Talk

Amy Arbus will present an Artist Talk on Sunday, August 25, at 4pm. Come to the gallery and learn about her career as a photographer and her latest inspiration. “AMY ARBUS | Beyond Reason,” an exhibit of photographs capturing the extraordinary feats of circus performers is on view until October 6.

The gallery is closed for installation of “AMY ARBUS | Beyond Reason,” an exhibition by the celebrated New York photographer of extraordinary, intimate images of circus performers. There will be an Opening and Artist Reception on Saturday, August 24, 5-7pm and an Artist Talk, Sunday, August 25 at 4pm. The exhibit will run through October 6, free and open to the public.

Bruce Campbell’s artist talk about his magical, hand-operated kinetic sculptures is available to watch. “I attempt to represent my understanding of events and conditions of the natural world while making these concepts functional and intriguing. My sculptures illustrate, in minimalist and transparent form, my perception of the universe—how these wonders might be visualized if moved by gears, levers, and basic mechanics.” See the exhibit through Sunday, August 18.

It’s already August and the gallery has been welcoming many summer visitors. Bruce Campbell’s Star Clock

This piece features a model of an astrolabe, an ancient device used for determining time and location, enabling astronomers to calculate star locations and the passage of time. “BRUCE CAMPBELL | Mechanical Universe,” an exhibit of kinetic sculptures created with brass, stainless steel and wood, through August 18.

Elegant Kinetic Sculpture

“Iowa,” inspired by old fashioned rural windmills still seen in the midwest, is one of many elegant kinetic sculptures featured in “BRUCE CAMPBELL | Mechanical Universe.” An Artist Talk is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, 5pm. The exhibit continues through August 18, all are welcome.

Jessie Pollock: Peccioli

In March Jessie Pollock visited Peccioli, Italy for two weeks. “I took alcohol inks, dry pigments and a large sheet of canvas which I tore into small pieces…Italy is all about antiquity, history, mystery, layer upon layer of ancientness. ” The middle gallery features 12 paintings from a new body of work, “JESSIE POLLOCK | Ricordi d’Italia, Peccioli.” The exhibit will run July 5 – August 18, all are welcome.

Emily Mason Solar Power

Summertime heat with Emily Mason’s “Solar Power” monotype. The gallery has a limited selection of Mason’s prints in our inventory. She approached printmaking with the mind and spirit of a painter, creating an extraordinary body of monoprints, monotypes and solarplate prints, which she referred to as “print paintings.”

The Emily Mason and Alice Trumbull Mason Foundation, formed in 2020, stewards the artistic legacy of Emily Mason alongside that of her mother, Alice Trumbull Mason, while embarking on a philanthropy program dedicated to advancing opportunities for traditionally underrepresented artists. Outstanding Printmaker, Liz Chalfin

Emily Mason’s “Expectation”

Emily Mason’s solarplate monoprints epitomize her spontaneous, daring use of color and form. The solarplate process was developed in 1970-71 by Dan Welden, Master Printmaker and pioneer of safer printmaking techniques. Dan Welden’s prints and paintings and “masterworks,” by modern art masters, are on view 11-5 Fri. & Sat., 12-5 Sun.

Jack Youngerman’s Solarplates

Jack Youngerman’s work combines hard-edged geometry with organic forms and fluid contours. Influenced by Henri Matisse while living in Paris in the 1940s and ’50s, his black & white solarplates conjure associations with Matisse’s paper cutouts, Rorschach patterns, and kaleidoscopic mandalas. Dan Welden’s prints and paintings and “masterworks,” by modern art masters, are currently on view 11-5 Thurs.-Sat., 12-5 Sun.

Eric Fischl’s Solarplates

In 1992 Dan Welden and Eric Fischl collaborated on a series of prints which inspired Welden to perfect the Solarplate process. Fischl’s fluid, figurative gestures showed the artistic possibilities offered by the method. Dan Welden’s prints and paintings and “masterworks,” by modern art masters, are currently on view 11-5 Thurs.-Sat., 12-5 Sun.

Roy Nicholson Toxic Garden

Featured in the East Gallery are four solarplate etchings from Roy Nicholson’s “Toxic Garden” series. Nicholson says, “…the works reflect the complexity of the natural world and how we are all tied up with it.” Dan Welden’s prints and paintings and “masterworks,” by modern art masters, are on view 11-5 Thurs.-Sat., 12-5 Sun.

Elaine de Kooning Lithographs

Elaine de Kooning’s “Pech Merle,” is named for a hillside cave at Cabrerets, one of the few prehistoric cave painting sites in France open to the public. In 1958, she travelled to Mexico, where she saw her first bullfight which inspired a series of bull paintings and prints. “Dan Welden: Solo 100,” featuring Welden’s prints and paintings and “masterworks,” hand-pulled collaborative impressions by modern art masters. The gallery is closed this week for installation of “The Art Life,” paintings, sculptures and prints by Fran Bull and “Between Worlds,” featuring prints and sculptures by Helen Schmidt. Osgood Awarded Grant

Gallery artist Susan Osgood, one of 20 artists selected from 985 applications from 47 countries, has been awarded a Gottlieb Grant. …intended to recognize individuals around the world who have dedicated long careers to making art and alleviate some of the financial burdens so they can devote more time and energy to their creative endeavors.

Artist Forum Video

On August 6 MGFA hosted an artist forum with our featured artists, Maggie Cahoon, Jessie Pollock, and Erika Radich. BCTV was there to tape the event, which is now available to view. “Inner Landscapes: Three Views” runs until August 27, the gallery is open Thursday-Sunday.

Jen Violette Glass

Currently on view, “Three Pears” by Jen Violette, whose work is inspired by the natural world and the gardens and forests that surround her Vermont studio. “Inner Landscapes: Three Views” featuring Maggie Cahoon, Jessie Pollock, and Erika Radich runs until August 27, the gallery is open Thursday-Sunday.

Mucuy Bolles Pottery

Currently on view, “Ixchel” by Mucuy Bolles, who says, “Whether the piece ends up with an overt indigenous identity or a simpler essence of motifs, I hope to infuse my work with the mysterious playfulness of my Mayan ancestors.” The exhibit runs until August 27, the gallery is open Thursday-Sunday.

Gallery Walk May 5

Art Connects US

In the gallery window is a flag assembled in 2017 by members of Brattleboro West Arts. Created to advance a positive voice for the artists in our group, to engage the public and foster discussion and collaboration concerning issues we deeply care about.

Spring Muse

Preserving Island Culture

Willa Cox is a contributor in “Voices of Hawai’i, Vol. 2,” an anthology of the Islands by Jane Marshall Goodsill. Sharing the stories of those who perpetuate the traditions of the Aloha State, including riders, surfers, scientists, artisans, soldiers, builders, farmers and foresters. Cox’s monotype, “Trees, No. 13” is on page 34.

Zea Mays Ice Shanty

The Artful Ice Shanty, “Shared Visions Near and Far” was created by Nancy Diessner and a team of artists from Zea Mays Printmaking. It was part of an outdoor exhibit presented by the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center and Retreat Farm. The ice shanty is now on view in the Atrium at the Brooks House in Brattleboro, VT.

“Chartreuse Table with Basket,” is one of seven new oil paintings by Rona Lee Cohen. Cohen’s vibrant palette and juxtaposed compositions are a pleasure to study. Deidre Sherer’s “Stories”

Deidre Scherer’s thread on fabric work, “Stories,” has been added to the Bennington Museum’s permanent collection through the generous donation of collectors, Sharron and Frank Kropa. In 1988, a detail of “Stories” appeared on the cover of “Threads Magazine.”

Final Week of A Retrospective

This week concludes the gorgeous gallery-wide exhibition of over 120 etchings, engravings and watercolors by printmaker, painter and educator Brian D. Cohen. “Brian D. Cohen: A Retrospective,” closing on December 11.

Please join us on Saturday December 3 at 5pm. Brattleboro Mural Project

Daniel Chiaccio of First Proof Press and graphic designer Calvin Laituri designed a mural picturing a Vermont vista morphing over the four seasons. They tapped painting help from the ArtLords, a group of Afghan artists who created murals on bomb-sheltering “blast walls” in their homeland before recently resettling in the United States.

Artifacts of the Present

“Artifacts of the Present: A Portrait of Brian D. Cohen,” is a new documentary of the artist Brian D. Cohen by Willow O’Feral and Brad Heck of Haptic Pictures filmed in Kennebunk, Maine in March 2022. Music by David Cohen, Bridge Press Records, with Sara Kazemi and Sarah McBroom.

Making Book

This exhibition includes the work of Zea Mays Printmaking members who, alongside their printmaking practice, create meaningful and often beautiful books in a variety of forms and mediums. Each artist was asked to provide a brief statement about process and technique, “Making Book” on view November 1 – December 31, 2022

Brian D. Cohen: Bestiary

“Bestiary,” a collaborative book comprising over thirty poems by Chard deNiord and prints by Brian D. Cohen, portrays the integrity of animals’ wildness, beauty, and beatitude, available at the gallery, $55. A selection of animal etchings are part of Brian D. Cohen: A Retrospective, on view until December 11.

Brian D. Cohen: Watercolors

Brian D. Cohen’s plein air watercolors are loose and luminous. They are painted onto wet paper, with washes added as the paper dries, focusing on observation of light, shape, and color in the landscape, simplifying or obscuring detail in favor of larger forms and the broader swell of color.

Nearly 500 people came to the gallery during Gallery Walk to view the new exhibit of work by printmaker Brian D. Cohen. A gallery-wide solo exhibition featuring over 100 prints, watercolors, and artist’s books from 1989 to 2022, will be on view until December 11.

Liz Chalfin Receives Award

LiZ Chalfin’s installation “Pit” is on view at Mixografia in Los Angeles as part of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society’s National Print Exhibition through November 12th. Juried by Kenturah Davis, her piece received the Leonard Edmondson Award in Printmaking.

Fuller Craft Museum

John Hughes Wins Ewing Arts Award

John Hughes, composer, sculptor, musician and dancer from Brattleboro has won the award for Folk and Traditional Arts. John Hughes’ work is currently on display at the gallery.

Christie’s to Auction Private Collection

Fields of Vision: The Private Collection of Artists Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason will feature Modern, Post-War and Contemporary paintings, works on paper, prints and sculptures. Proceeds from the auctions will benefit the Wolf Kahn | Emily Mason Foundation and the Emily Mason | Alice Trumbull Mason Foundation.

The Brattleboro Reformer visited gallery artist Bruce Campbell to learn more about his creative process. Campbell’s kinetic sculptures demonstrate, in elegant and minimalist form, his perception of the universe … if moved by gears, levers, and basic mechanics.

Giovanni’s Dream

New Kinetic sculpture by Bruce Campbell. “Inspired by Giovanni di Paolo’s 1445 painting ‘The Expulsion from Paradise’ where he depicts the known version of the cosmos with the earth at the center and the planets revolving around the sun. In my piece the upper arch is the boundary of heaven and the broken horizontal disk the incomplete knowledge they had about the universe. The planets revolving around the earth rotate at different speeds with those closest to the center spinning faster than those farther out.”

Jackie Abrams has been a basket maker and fiber artist since 1975. “This retrospective exhibit allows me to share pieces from my collection that I have created and accumulated during all my years of learning, experimenting and constructing.”

After Images in Shop

In April, 2015, Mitchell-Giddings Fine Arts exhibited After Images, a suite of photographs New York photographer Amy Arbus made in 2011 and 2012 to pay homage to her favorite painters. The book, After Images, presents this series of photographs of live scenes staged to replicate the original paintings from the early 20th century.
