Whenever I’m asked to write an artist statement, I often think of a quote by the painter Carmen Herrera, “Paintings speak for themselves.” That sums it all up. What more, really, needs to be said?

For a few years now, I’ve found myself strongly going in two directions: one, making paintings with a lot of detail … and two, making paintings with no detail. I really don’t know why I feel compelled to do both, I’ve just come to accept it.
