My work is a compilation of picture fragments that I have photographed, drawn, written about and remembered.
The still life images, “Mirror Ball”, “Self Portrait”, “Duck on a Bike” and “Cereus with Duck” derive from a collection of objects entwined with a Night Blooming Cereus. They are surrounded by high contrast window light. By endlessly photographing my subjects, I find key compositions which are drawn/overlaid onto collages made from pieces of my prints and paintings. It is amazing how everything so surprisingly falls into place.
The “Armadillo” and “Camel + Elephant Fish” series were in part created during my online classes, “Printing Without a Press” at Woodstock School of Art where animals are often the theme. It all started during this past year with my images of people floating in a boat. The figures were accompanied by animals, some familiar and some unfamiliar. The theme is extended here with “The Camel + Elephant Fish.” These works are water based monotype prints. The “Armadillo” with it’s human-like stance, intriguing texture and distinctive claws—used for digging, called to me to be a woodcut print series. This traditional Hanga style group of prints in color variations and Chine Collé is printed with Nori—rice paste and water based inks and pigments.
