THE ART OF THE CHOP
Collaborative Prints and Collages of the Sea by Lisa Mackie
December 20, 2019 – February 9, 2020
Opening: Friday, December 20, 5-7pm
Artist Talk: Saturday, January 25, 5pm
The Art of the Chop refers to the “chop” or seal, the embossed stamp usually pressed into the lower left corner of the print, a symbol of where the piece was printed. Lisa Mackie is a master printer and artist who has extended her expertise, creativity and guidance to numerous artists for over forty years. As she works with each artist, Mackie’s philosophy is to be the catalyst for the creative process and the consultant to create a print within the most effective technique or method. She is able to facilitate most printmaking processes—including lithography, serigraphy, monotype, intaglio and photo-based. She encourages the artist to engage, process, combine, and complete a print that mimics, but does not necessarily replicate his/her artist project. Her role is much more of a translator, sharing her vast knowledge of the language of prints and teaching the artist to “speak” in new ways.
MGFA has invited master printer Lisa Mackie to present a group exhibition of fine art prints chronicling forty years of work produced at her studio in midtown Manhattan. The Art of the Chop features a diverse group of well-established artists and their largely experimental, innovative, and vibrant prints that each made in collaboration with Lisa Mackie. A second exhibition, Collages of the Sea, features Mackie’s own collages and prints.

Lisa Mackie
Lisa Mackie received a BFA at the University of Michigan and a MFA from the University of Wisconsin. She then taught at the Massachusetts College of Art and was a lithographer at the Impressions Workshop. She moved to New York City and worked as an independent printmaker at both the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop and at Kathy Caraccio’s “contract print shop.” These experiences persuaded her to open her own studio in Manhattan. For over 40 years Mackie has collaborated with many artists, making prints using techniques including monotype, intaglio, serigraphy, lithography and photo-based process. Lisa Mackie works in mixed media prints, paintings, original books, sculpture, video and installation.
