Silk Collagraph Prints with Akua Inks in the Style of Emily Mason
Join Mitchell•Giddings Fine Arts on Saturday and Sunday, August 8-9, 9am-5pm at Studio 7 for a Workshop on Making Silk Collagraph Prints with Akua Inks in the Style of Emily Mason. Lisa Mackie was Emily Mason’s favorite printer. They worked together for many years. Mackie was responsible for Mason creating some of her most experimental, iconic monotypes and monoprints. The Akua printmaking inks are soy based and can be washed off with water and soap for easy clean up. This is a great substitute for traditional oil-based printmaking inks. The intense colors wipe smoothly like oil base creating deep rich values and plate tones. Akua etching inks are ideal for Intaglio/Etching, Monotype, Gel and Collagraph printmaking. Bring your drawings, collages, prints, photo ideas, etc.
On the second day we will explore printing the prepared painted surface. Working from dark to light using using a range of rollers and wiping tools we can create subtle tones and blended colors/values à la Emily Mason’s rich and chine colléd collage monoprints. Often, by staying with the same plate and reactivating the ghost image, amazing second prints will result. The class will have the opportunity to view work by Emily Mason and Lisa Mackie as well as other artists working in these types of printmaking techniques. Much more information will be presented that will inform the student’s future prints.
