It’s hard to find a true, untrammelled note in this time of electrified opinionation. I remember thinking ‘in times like these you need a lucky charm.’ I wandered the house and there was Joan’s papier-maché sculpture ‘Guardian.’ And that was a beginning, a heart-to-heart with my dear artist friend and her sculpture that felt so protective and pink.
In fall, I traveled to New York City and Washington, D.C., and spent days in that most precious experience of being awash in great art in galleries and museums. So many artists whose work touches our humanity and leads the way—I am awed by their brilliance and temerity. And it struck me…I should have known this before—how free art is, how unlimited the freedom of expression, how boundless.
So I began this series of paintings in a more reckless and free way than usual—slipping around in paint ahead of hesitation, led by the simplicity of urge, snatching a bit of courage for the ride.

“Each painting is a new relationship…It’s an unpredictable, unsteady process. There is a place where the seen touches the unseen and unravels a bit, moving in and out of something sensible.”
