“Jessie Pollock’s richly textured landscape paintings and luminous photo-based images are romantic, sensuous and evocative. They suggest the passage of time and evoke nostalgia for times past. Intensely appealing for their tactile surfaces and radiant light, Pollock’s paintings transcend the reality of a specific time or place. Though modern in their materials and sensibility, these works send us back to a way of life now vanishing.”
~Susan Strickler, Director of the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH
I always work on panels because I need a stable substrate so I can attach items and insert boxes for the placement of stones. My medium for the painting is mostly Cold Wax. In the cold wax I add oil paints and dry pigments. Many layers are applied including ones of alcohol inks, stencils, and pieces of paper embedded. Basically I am trying to achieve a weathered, historical final product. By adding sand, wood ash or marble dust to the wax I create a thick layer that allows me to then scratch and carve into the layer. As I work, I think of the surfaces of nature like the surface of stone or the bark of trees or flowing water.
