My current work is based on Google Earth images of the American Midwest. From a certain height very little of the landscape is readily identifiable. Natural and manmade features blend into a swirl of line and color, with the underlying grid prevalent in that part of the country often discernable. I use Prismacolor pencil, layering the colors until I get the richness of tone I'm trying to achieve.
